Explication:
The exhibition invites you to discover Minsk as an aesthetic reality, which is created not only by architects and urban planners, but also invented by belarusian artists. Based on contemporary paintings, photography, art-installations, performance and street-art, it would be easy to reconstruct the city if it suddenly disappeared.
Walking around Minsk created by artists, it is easy to find yourself in an empty and blank space. For example, for A. Klinau broad avenues and large squares are a reminder of socialist utopia, which the city authorities tried to embody in the architecture of our Belarusian capital. Nevertheless, utopia (M. Naprushkina) remained a utopia, and the space which remains is unreal and empty (A. Ivanov, S. Zdanovich). It holds the memory of the past, which is not left to change (O. Youshko), to speak about private (M. Gulin) and public (O. Sozikina, A. Pushkin).
For the first time, the image of Minsk as a socialist city, as a city in the process of being built, as a young city-hero appeared in the work of M. Danzig, V. Varlamov and B. Kazakov. Meanwhile, between paintings from this period, a romantic idea of the city can be found, a notion which is full of imagination (Z. Litvinova, I. Basov). However, it is the belarusian avant-garde of 1980’s (A. Molchanov, A. Klinau, V. Pesin) that makes you ponder on Minsk as strange, uncontrolled space, that could be appropriated or imagined in different way.
The topic of appropriation and holding of urban space is developing in contemporary and actual belarussian art. Today artists try to rethink relations between art and the city (S. Kiruschenko, S. Shabohin, I. Savchenko), they play with the space of Minsk (P. Vojnitskij, A. Kudriashov), adding in new signs and senses (I. Moschenskaya, Dream-Minsk, art group «Lena Krasit»).
